I am using WinSCP as my FTP client. It has worked with Galaxy in the past, though the ftp address has changed since then.

I have followed the instructions on https://galaxyproject.org/ftp-upload, trying to connect to ftp://usegalaxy.org with the email address and password that I use on the main site. However, I get the error:

No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. Connection failed.

I have verified that my login information still works on the main website, I'm certain that my client is not defaulting back to SFTP, and I am using a passive mode connection. What else should I be trying to make a successful connection?

Hello,

The server url should always be one of these:

  • usegalaxy.org
  • ftps://usegalaxy.org

Any connection method I've tested using "ftp://usegalaxy.org" has been rejected as you describe. I use a MAC with lftp or Filezilla, not WinSCP, but this should be true across access methods.

If all else fails, maybe consider using a different FTP client? I am assuming that firewalls are not an issue or that you have already checked with your local admins to make sure that type of situation isn't a factor.

Let us know if the corrected server name does not resolve the problem and we can troubleshoot more. Screenshots of the settings/command strings can help.

Thanks! Jen, Galaxy team

Thank you Jen! It looks like my issue ended up being with my wifi's firewall. For some reason, the security when I connect my university's VPN is less restrictive, so my workaround is to log into the VPN before trying to connect to the FTP.
