I'm having trouble connecting to the FTP server usegalaxy.org. Although my FTP client is using the given IP address my institutions firewall logs indicate I am being redirected to a secondary IP address and I am are actually going to galaxy-web-05.tacc.utexas.edu (129.114.60.60) per firewall logs. Is this expected? Just wanted to check. Thanks, Andy

I double checked with our admin and he states:
This is not a redirect. usegalaxy.org is a DNS round robin to galaxy-web-05 and galaxy-web-06. If you connect to usegalaxy.org with your FTP client, you should hit one of the two.
So yes this is expected and OK to connect to.

I now have another problem, I can log in but Filezilla cannot find the directory listings (error below). Is this a problem at my end or yours?

Use Passive (not Active) mode with Filezilla to avoid this issue.
I'm sorry Jen and thank you for taking the time, but that didn't work for some reason. From the Filezilla messages below it seems the program entered passive mode but still timed out. Do I need to set a default directory for my username or something?

Are you using a PC by any chance? Other reports of problems using Filezilla with Windows, even when passive mode is specifically set, have been reported. We do not have a solution for this (yet).
Using active mode with Filezilla with MAC OS will also produce the same problem, but if the settings are changed to use passive mode the connection is successful (and still secure). If on a MAC, do this by opening Filezilla, going into the menu "Settings" then Connection > FTP and checking the radio box for passive mode.
If using windows, perhaps try a different client? The problem is with the MLSD command that Filezilla uses to obtain directory listings. This command has been reported as problematic when using Filezilla, it does not appear that it will be fixed (by the Filezilla tool authors) and occurs in different circumstances (not just when connecting to a Galaxy server).

Cyberduck seems to be giving a similar error - it logs in just fine and then times out saying:
"Connection timed out: connect. The connection attempt was rejected. The server may be down, or your network may not be properly configured."
I have contacted my network admin to see if the issue is ours.

Jen - we still can't access, with the same problem using Filezilla, Cyberduck and WINSCP. Basically I can log in and connect through port 21 and then for some reason, presumably while searching for directories, I get moved to a different port (30541, 30935) and it times out? The upshot being i cannot log in to transfer files. Did your admin have any feedback? Thank you, Andy
