Today my history went missing and I am unable to find it in saved histories.

I had used only about 40% of allotted space, but now it shows 0% has been used (this was on the main server usegalaxy.org)

Any help much appreciated.

Hello,

How long ago was the history created? Meaning, was this one that you are actively working on or something you are coming back to? There are some known issues with history display right now, but not this exact issue. If it is a problem, we want to fix it.

I'll watch for more details and let our team know this is a potential problem.

Thanks! Jen, Galaxy team

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the response.
I was just using my history yesterday and managed to download one of my cuffdiff outputs to analyze on my local instance of galaxy (which I had also just set up yesterday). When I went to download my other cuffdiff output sets, the history was gone, and nothing was showing in saved histories.

Thanks for the help. - Greg

Any ideas or solutions to this Jen?

Would it have something to do with my local admin account, which uses the same email as my usegalaxy account, overriding my stored information?

Thanks for the help. -Greg

Hi Greg,

My sincere apologies for the delayed reply.

I have examined your account. There are three histories all named "Unnamed history" (the default). Of the two active, one has content. Of the permanently deleted, one has content, last used on 6/9.

Under "Saved Histories", click on "Advanced search" and then "status = all" to review each.

Please have a look in this "status = all" view and see if that is the history you were working with. Any actions that you took on your own local Galaxy would have no impact on the public http://usegalaxy.org server. Each Galaxy server is independent. However, it could be possible to mix up the Galaxy server you are working on if the url is not noted. Naming histories can help a bit with this - I do that myself to keep track of what is where since I also am on several during any point in time. One easy way to rename a history is to click on the name in the UI and then type in the new name, followed by using the "return" key on your keyboard to save the info.

It takes two steps to permanently delete (also known as "purge") a history or any Galaxy object - dataset, workflow, etc. This means it will not occur without direct action or by accident via a single action. Although, that is still possible if you did not understand the UI cues and did this unintentionally. Permanently deleted data is nearly always impossible to recover, the full details are in the Galaxy wiki: Delete_vs_Delete_Permanently. But I will still ask our team if this is possible, if you want it back - please let me know. No promises, but we can check.

Thank you again for your patience! Jen, Galaxy team

Hi Jen,

Thank you very much for looking into it.
It is still a mystery to me how my history could have been permanently deleted, even if by accident, but crazier things have happened!
Fortunately, I am almost caught up again so trying to restore the deleted history won't be necessary.

I appreciate you taking the time to help out, thanks again!

- Greg
