To troubleshoot, read the FAQ help and double check the settings against the instructions - server name, email address, and password must all be correct. Be aware that Galaxy accounts/credentials (email, password) are server-specific. Most people who have trouble are not using passive FTP or have used an incorrect server name and/or account creds.

For Galaxy Main, the server name is simply usegalaxy.org (no prefix). For other public Galaxy servers, the base URL is also the server name (no prefix). Not all public Galaxy servers will have FTP enabled. If you are not sure if the target server has FTP enabled, contacting the admins of the server you are working on is a good way to find out if FTP is active and working.

If FTP continues to fail, there may be a firewall where you are working preventing the connection. Check with your local admin or ISP provider for advice (how to get around a firewall can vary).

I was able to upload just now to usegalaxy.org. Same method as described above.

Install Filezilla, use all default settings, enter the server name/email address/password, quick connect, accept the security certificate that pops up, and then transfer data. If a larger transfer aborts for some reason, connect again and the transfer can be resumed from where it dropped off.

If you haven't tried FTP with the above method yet, please do.

If you still have problems:

Have you checked with your admin/ISP support to see if a firewall is a factor? This is important - we can't help to solve those issues or provide a workaround. What did they say or was some action taken?
Has FTP ever worked for your before (at usegalaxy.org), or have you always had problems?
What has changed since it used to work? And how long ago was that?
What (if anything) is being done differently from the above method? Is there a reason why the default settings are not appropriate for your use case?
