I am starting my local Galaxy instance with command:

sh run.sh --daemon

However, this way I don't get notified when Galaxy server stops working for whatever reason. I would like to get email when this happens so that I could start it again. What would you recommend? Thanks.

There are a lot of different ways you can do this. But this is not related to Galaxy in general. For example you can setup a cron daemon to check if you process is running or a watchdog. There are also a lot of web services that are trying to ping your webserver regularly and notify you if your service is offline.
