I can't see histories that were shared with me only via e-mail - it's not present when I open "View All Histories". It does work with an access link, though.

Look under "Histories Shared with Me" for these. Make copies to import into your account to work with them.

D'oh! Thank you, but this is extremely unintuitive. Especially since "view all histories" implies, well, all histories. IMO it should also be there.
The rationale behind this is that accounts can share histories with other accounts, but it is up to the receiving account holder whether or not to import the object.
If just shared, only a teeny fraction of the shared history counts toward the receiving account data usage quota plus any History shared can be unshared. Once imported, shared imported histories do count in the receiving account usage quota (in full).
It is a way to grant a control decision that we think is worth it. Otherwise, any account could share a very large history with any other account directly and in full .. potentially exceeding quota by surprise in a confusing way.
There are almost certainly other ways to model this, but the current method has worked well for many years now.
