Hi Greg:

Maybe this is out of date. Based on the following experiment, I think there must be some  limitations on which python expressions are supported. 

e.g. when i attempt to calculate this value str(c2)[11] of a tabular field galaxy reports 

Invalid expression

So at least python's slice feature is not available. (or I've misunderstood something).
