Hello everybody,

lately we are experiencing some problems with our local Galaxy instance: Very slow start-up and very high load average caused by Galaxy: have a look at htop output. Is it normal that so many paster.py server processes are running in parallel? It looks to me as if multiple Galaxy instances are spawned.

We are still using version 17.01. I know that the most obvious try would be to upgrade Galaxy. Still, is there something else we could try first?

Hi,

Much has changed since 17.01. Upgrading is the best solution. You'll probably have tool install problems, too, if using the latest wrapper versions from the ToolShed.

Galaxy 18.01 had a significant number of performance improvements - the largest number bundled into a single release ever. The release notes contain the details.

You could review to see if your issue was addressed (in any of the releases from 17.01 forward) and might be able to upgrade/patch just that back in (if it was not back-ported to 17.01 already). But this would all be a test.

Thanks, Jen, Galaxy team
