Question: Does your uploaded data remain private? -- Using Galaxy for clinical or private patient data analysis

Hi When I upload the data, does it remain secure? Do others in the community have access to it? Do the results remain private, or are they part of some database?

Any data processed in Galaxy is part of that server's database. Any clusters that process the data would also have it during the duration of the job processing. Administrators will have access for troubleshooting reasons. Other external users would only be granted access if you have Shared (created a shareable link and sent that to others) and/or Published (anyone on that server would have access) your data.

  • Sharing and Publishing your work

It is not recommended to use a public Galaxy server when analyzing sensitive data (clinical or similar). We take security very seriously but are not set up in a way that can guarantee privacy at the level often required for a non-public patient or clinical usage. Using your own Galaxy on a secured server (likely behind a firewall and not public internet accessible) is a better choice. If you have questions about what level of security your data requires, talk to the security administrators at your institution or place of work.
